Teens, Autism, and Jobs, Oh My!
Watching other teens get their first part-time jobs is a bittersweet experience for me as a mom. I see the excitement in their eyes as they step into the world of responsibility, independence, and growth. It’s a milestone I always imagined for my daughter as well. But right now, it’s not where we are, and that’s okay. Every journey is unique, and hers is just taking a different path.
My daughter is bright, curious, and full of potential. While she’s not ready for the workforce yet, I know that her time will come. She has so much to offer the world, and I’m confident that when the moment is right, she’ll find a role that truly aligns with her strengths and passions. There’s no rushing growth—it happens in its own time, and I’ve learned to embrace that.
Still, as a mom, I can’t help but wish for a world where opportunities were more accessible to neurodivergent individuals like her. Many workplaces are still not equipped to embrace workers with diverse needs and perspectives, and that’s something that needs to change. Inclusion isn’t just about creating opportunities; it’s about reshaping the systems to celebrate and support everyone’s contributions.
I dream of a future where job opportunities exist for all ages, at all levels, and for every kind of thinker. Imagine a workplace where neurodivergence is not only accepted but valued as a strength. My daughter—and so many others like her—deserve to enter a world where their unique gifts are seen and appreciated.
Until that day, I hold onto hope and keep advocating. Change is slow, but it’s possible. By raising awareness and fostering understanding, we can build a more inclusive future, one step at a time. I know my daughter’s journey will be beautiful and impactful, and I can’t wait to see where it takes her.
